On Monday, July 28, the City of Lennox was struck by a powerful and sudden windstorm, with gusts over 90 miles per hour. The storm caused widespread damage throughout the community—uprooting trees, scattering debris, damaging a few structures, and leaving many residents with cleanup work of their own. In the face of this severe weather event, every City department stepped in to assist with the cleanup effort, working together to restore safety and order as quickly as possible.
From the moment the winds died down, city staff across departments mobilized. Public Works crews were dispatched to clear roads, remove hazardous limbs, and restore traffic safety. Parks and Recreation employees helped begin the removal of fallen trees. Even personnel typically focused on office or administrative work lent a hand wherever they could. It was a true all-hands-on-deck situation—and a demonstration of teamwork in action.
One major part of the ongoing cleanup effort involves dealing with the tremendous number of downed trees and limbs. The City has designated the old football field as the temporary staging area for wood and brush debris. In the coming days, the City’s contractor will begin grinding trees and limbs on-site for disposal. For your safety and the safety of our contractor’s workers, we are asking all residents to stay clear of the grinding area during this operation. Heavy machinery will be in use, and the worksite will be dangerous for unauthorized visitors.
We appreciate the patience and understanding of residents as this work continues. The cleanup will not be finished overnight, but every step we take brings us closer to normal. Our priority remains the safety of our citizens, the restoration of public spaces, and the continued functioning of critical city services.
The severity of the storm and the scale of the response could have been overwhelming. But thanks to the spirit and strength of our community, we were able to move quickly and with purpose. Neighbors checked on each other. Volunteers offered help before being asked. Residents cleared sidewalks and driveways, lent tools, and shared updates.
