Bike

As summer comes to an end and a new school year begins, we want to remind everyone that safety is a top priority in our community. You will notice increased traffic with school buses, students walking and biking, and parents dropping off and picking up children. Taking a few extra moments to slow down and stay alert can make a big difference in keeping our kids safe.

🛑 For Drivers:
With school back in session, drivers should expect heavier traffic during morning and afternoon hours. Please slow down and strictly follow posted school zone speed limits. These reduced speeds are in place to protect children who may be crossing streets or walking near roadways. Always stop for school buses when their red lights are flashing—this is not only the law, but a critical step in protecting students as they get on and off the bus.

Be especially cautious at intersections, crosswalks, and in residential neighborhoods. Children may be unpredictable and can step into the roadway unexpectedly. Avoid distractions such as cell phones or in-vehicle technology while driving through school zones. Your full attention behind the wheel can prevent a tragedy.

🚶‍♂️ For Students and Parents:
Parents, now is a great time to review safety rules with your children. Encourage them to always use designated crosswalks and follow the directions of crossing guards. Remind them to look both ways before crossing the street and to never assume a driver sees them.

Students should walk on sidewalks whenever they are available. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic and stay as far from the roadway as possible. Bright or reflective clothing can help improve visibility, especially during early morning hours.

If your child rides a bike to school, make sure they wear a properly fitted helmet every time they ride. They should also follow the same traffic laws as vehicles, including stopping at stop signs and signaling turns. Limiting distractions such as phones or headphones while walking or biking is also important so they can stay aware of their surroundings.

🚌 Bus Stop Safety:
Safety at the bus stop is just as important as safety on the road. Students should arrive at their bus stop early and wait in a safe location away from traffic. Avoid running or playing near the roadway. When the bus arrives, wait until it comes to a complete stop and follow the driver’s instructions.

If students need to cross the street, they should always cross in front of the bus and only after the driver signals that it is safe to do so. Never walk behind a school bus, as the driver may not be able to see you.

As a community, we all play a role in keeping our children safe. By staying alert, following the law, and practicing good safety habits, we can help ensure every student gets to and from school safely each day.

Let’s work together to make this a safe and successful school year for everyone. 👮‍♂️🚸
