The City of Lennox continues to take a proactive approach in addressing the threat posed by Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). Since its discovery, city staff and elected officials have worked to develop a long-term strategy that protects public safety, minimizes future costs, and preserves the health of our community's urban forest.
As part of that effort, city staff will ask the City Council next year to consider an ordinance declaring all untreated ash trees a public nuisance. While this may seem like a significant step, it reflects the reality that untreated ash trees will inevitably succumb to Emerald Ash Borer. Once infested, ash trees rapidly decline, becoming brittle and unstable. Dead and dying trees pose risks to homes, vehicles, utility lines, sidewalks, and public spaces, creating safety concerns for both property owners and the community as a whole.
Under the proposed ordinance, ash trees that have not been professionally treated to protect against EAB will be required to be removed and destroyed. Property owners who wish to preserve healthy ash trees will still have the option to do so through professional treatment programs. However, trees left untreated will eventually become hazardous and will need to be removed.
Recognizing that tree removal can be a significant expense, the City of Lennox is committed to working with residents who have limited financial resources. Staff will explore options to assist property owners and help ensure compliance with the ordinance while minimizing the financial burden on families. The goal is not to penalize residents, but rather to address a community-wide problem before it becomes a larger public safety issue.
The most important message for property owners is simple: act as soon as possible. Healthy ash trees are generally easier and less expensive to remove than trees that have been heavily infested by Emerald Ash Borer. As EAB progresses, trees become increasingly brittle and dangerous to work around, requiring specialized equipment and additional labor. This can significantly increase removal costs.
By taking action now—whether through professional treatment or timely removal—property owners can save money, reduce risks, and help Lennox manage the long-term impacts of Emerald Ash Borer. Proactive decisions today will help ensure a safer and more resilient community for years to come.
