As the City of Lennox works to mitigate the impact that the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) infestation presents, we understand that cost can pose a significant challenge for many property owners. While the removal of declining or untreated ash trees is often necessary to protect public safety and prevent damage to homes, vehicles, sidewalks, and utility infrastructure, the cost of tree removal can be substantial for some residents – sometimes into the thousands of dollars. As Lennox moves forward with its long-term Emerald Ash Borer Recovery Plan, the City is committed to finding solutions that balance public safety with affordability.
To assist property owners, the City is offering a special assessment that would allow eligible tree removal costs to be repaid over a ten-year period rather than requiring payment in full at the time of removal. This approach provides residents with an affordable financing option while ensuring that hazardous trees can be addressed before they become a greater risk to the community.
The special assessment program is intended to help residents who may not have the financial resources to immediately remove an ash tree but still want to protect their property. By spreading costs over multiple years, the City hopes to reduce the financial burden on homeowners while maintaining a proactive response to EAB.
Lennox's goal is not simply to remove trees, but to help residents navigate the challenges created by EAB in a practical and responsible manner. Through education, financial flexibility, and long-term planning, the City can work together with property owners to preserve public safety and build a more resilient urban forest for future generations.
